Program Description:
Our intensive two-week upper endoscopy course for novice first-year fellows covered fundamental elements (scope handling, standardized EGD, biopsy) as well as advanced endoscopic techniques (polypectomy, dilation, clipping, electrocautery, band ligation, hemostasis). We developed online modules with competency assessments and one-on-one hands-on workshops using novel simulators. At the end of their two-week training period, all fellows were able to demonstrate competency on simulator-based metrics. In addition, we monitored our fellows’ progress with a validated clinical assessment tool (the ACE tool from the American Society of Gastrointestinal Endoscopy) for an additional 6-month period and found that their cumulative scores rose significantly faster (250%) compared to that of first-year fellows without an initial simulator-based training curriculum.
