Dr. Tonya Kaltenbach is a professor of Medicine at UC San Francisco (UCSF) and the Director of Advanced Endoscopy at the San Francisco VA Medical Center. She completed her fellowship training at Stanford. As T32 fellow, she also completed her Masters in Advanced Studies in Clinical Research -Epidemiology and Biostatistics from UCSF. She then pursued advanced endoscopy training at California Pacific Medical Center under the Interventional Endoscopy Services group in endoscopic imaging and advanced resection, and subsequently at the National Cancer Center, Tokyo, Japan. She was recognized in 2022 as a Distinguished Master Endoscopist by the American Society for Gastrointestinal Endoscopy, and in 2014 as a Distinguished Master Educator, reflecting her passion to mastery of both endoscopy and education.
She has served on the US Multi-Society Task Force on Colorectal Cancer and led the guideline development for the endoscopic removal of colorectal lesions. She served on the National Comprehensive Cancer Network (NCCN) Colorectal Cancer Screening Panel, and on the American College of Gastroenterology Educational Affairs Committee. Dr. Kaltenbach is a leading faculty speaker and regularly presents at national and international conferences and events related to gastrointestinal endoscopy.
She has a focus to modernize endoscopic teaching using adult learning with deliberate practice, expert performance approach, and simulation based mastery learning, and is currently completing a Master’s degree in Health Professions Education at Johns Hopkins. She has directed simulation based mastery learning hands-on and virtual training events for trainees and practicing providers around the world. Her special areas of expertise include advanced endoscopic resection of colon lesions, optical diagnosis of gastrointestinal lesions, endoscopic management of gastrointestinal bleeding and endoscopic surveillance and management of patients with inflammatory bowel disease.
Dr. Kaltenbach’s research interests primarily focus on improving the quality of colon cancer screenings through endoscopic imaging, advanced endoscopic therapies, novel training methods, and the development of evidence-based clinical practice guidelines. Throughout her career, she has led and participated in numerous pivotal randomized trials, observation studies, as well as consensus and guideline statements.
